The Isle of Bute lies off the west coast of Scotland in the Firth of Clyde, nestling between the Isle of Arran and the Isles of Cumbrae and the mainland. It is easily accessible by road, rail and air, with Glasgow less than an hour away from the ferry port at Wemyss Bay and regular train services linking directly with Glasgow Central Station, and the link to the airport at Paisley Gilmour Street.

Plan Farm occupies the southern-most peninsular of the island, and is surrounded by the sea on three sides, starting at Dunagoil Bay on the west and reaching all the way round to Kilchattan Bay on the east.
